People often forget that breakfast - the most important meal of the day, according to any number of authority figures from my youth - is an opportunity to create culinary magic. Fortunately for those based in Beijing who find themselves in need of top quality international cuisine after rolling out of bed (and I put myself in that category), the chefs at Kerry's Kitchen are heroes.
From the moment you set foot inside the bright and relaxed restaurant, you're treated to a rainbow display of freshly-squeezed fruit juices. Take a few more steps inside and you'll spy a hearty selection of western delights - the highlight being a sizzling honey-baked breakfast ham that's as sweet and tender as its name suggests. You even get to carve it yourself...so go to town.
If you can drag yourself away from the ham (or if someone drags you away because you've carved enough for ten people), make sure you tuck into all the other piping hot goodies on offer - strips of bacon, sausages, hash browns, baked beans. And let's not forget the egg bar, where those heroic chefs will conjure up your order in record time.
Diners in possession of a sweet tooth can indulge in fresh fluffy pancakes and waffles, with a heart-stopping choice of toppings -whipped cream, chocolate sauce, peanut butter. There's even a rectangular honeycomb, held in place above a long dish, that literally drips honey. Happily, my colleague was on hand to stop me positioning my head underneath and opening my mouth.
Given its location in the heart of Beijing's CBD, Kerry's Kitchen also serves a selection of Chinese specialties. There's hot soy bean soup and deep-fried dough sticks, as well as tiny dim sum mouthfuls steaming away in bamboo trays.
If you want to indulge in a hearty breakfast feast at Kerry's Kitchen (located in the Kerry Hotel, Beijing), contact the restaurant at: (8610) 85652088. Breakfast runs from 6 to 11am and costs 198 + 15%.
