Beijing has been dressed in festive decorations ahead of the "Golden Week" holiday beginning on Wednesday.

Chinese flags have been attached to all the lampposts in Tiananmen Square, drawing many photographers. Workers have pulled all-nighters to beautify the iconic square by changing the lights and adjusting the spray of its fountains.

On Sunday morning, they kept up the annual tradition of replacing the portrait of Chairman Mao Zedong on Tiananmen Gate with a fresh copy that will remain in place for the next year.

More than 22 million potted flowers have been placed across the Chinese capital, according to the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscape and Forestry.

The National Day holiday typically sees a tourism boom across the country. The China Tourism Academy expects 480 million trips to be made by travelers during Golden Week, up 13 percent year on year.
