The police have found over 16,000 tourist buses with irregularities during a traffic campaign, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) announced Tuesday.

Violations included buses that were being used beyond the dates on their service contracts, others that had not been registered with the relevant government agencies, as well as tourist buses that lacked official logos.

A total of 412,000 buses were checked during this first stage of the two-month campaign, and 9,305 tourist enterprises have been investigated.

The MPS said the next stage will focus on license plates. Drivers who use fake or shielded license plates may have their vehicles detained, and their license suspended.

There were several accidents involving tourist buses this year. In May, a tourist bus plunged into a valley in Shaanxi Province, northwest China, killing 30.
