Kanas Lake, Xinjiang
Kanas Lake is located in the northern Burqin County of Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, 150 kilometers from Burqin Town. Nestled in the deep forests and snow-capped mountains of Altay, Kanas Lake is covered with dense forests and is the only area where some animal and plant species of southern Siberia can be found in China.
In autumn, it presents a picturesque landscape of forests in a riot of colors with gold, red, blue and green to excite the sights and senses.
The traditions of the Tuwa Tribe, and the Altay Mountain rock-paintings have been attracting explorers and travelers to this area for decades.
Kanasi Lake is 140km from Burqin County and 246km from Altay City. There are flights to Altay City and tourist coaches to Burqin County from Urumqi. You can enter the nature reserve by car or on horseback with local guides.
Best Time to go: Due to the long winter in the area, Kanas is open for tours only from June to October every year. October is the best time for its autumn beauty.
