3D filmmaking is hardly brand new technology. But the old format often produced a dizzying effect which was harsh on the eye. The new format has no such issues.
The 3D showing of "The Polar Express" in 2004 grossed 45 million dollars at the box office. And "Chicken Little"'s 3D version earned twice as much per screen as its 2D version.
A fantasy film based on the old English epic poem of the same name, "Beowulf" was created through a motion capture process similar to the technique used in "The Polar Express". Showing at 700 screen across the United States, "Beowulf" garnered 23 million dollars in its opening month. Revenues from the IMAX 3D version accounted for 30 percent of the total box office takings. The financial rewards have seen many film studios wake up to realize quite how popular 3D technology is.
"Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert" is a 2008 feature-length music video from Walt Disney presented in Digital 3D. The movie brought in over eight million dollars on its opening day, a figure that soared to 31 million by the end of the weekend. It was the highest grossing opening weekend for a film released in less than 1000 theatres.
