Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai gave the public the definitive version of Ashes of Time. It is an epic martial arts masterpiece with larger than life characters, breathtaking landscapes and exquisite fight scenes. And now, Ashes of Time Redux,a restored and re-edited version, aims to relive the box office glory of the film's release in the 1990s.
The storyline can be traced back to "The Eagle Shooting Heroes", a series of novels written by Louis Cha under the pseudonym Jin Yong in the 1980s. The film premiered to a mediocre reception in the 1994, but was soon revered as a classic of Chinese film-making. It has been called a breathtaking example of Wong's masterly storytelling technique, combined with the stunning cinematography of Christopher Doyle. Parts of the script became catch phrases for young people. Wong recently told the press that his reasons for making the film were quite simple.
