With Christmas and New Year's behind us, many people are beginning to think about plans for next month's Spring Festival. But one long-held tradition, a new year's eve dinner with family, could be in for a big change this year, with many opting for a lunch instead.

For more than a decade, Ms. Yang and her family enjoyed new year's eve dinner at a restaurant, instead of at home.

Ms. Yang said, "Since my parents are 70 years old, we decided to have dinner out to save them the bother of cooking."

This year, they already booked a table well before the big day. Those looking to book a table now, will have a tough time finding an opening.

Xiao Ruiming, from Sunya Cantonese Restaurant, said, "Usually we start taking reservations a year in advance. For example, the 2010 reservations started in January 2009. A month later, they were nearly all booked."
