An annual festival has opened in Northeast China's Jilin Province. Chagan Lake is one of the ten biggest fresh water lakes in China and winter fishing there has been going on for over 2,000 years. In 2008, the Lake set a Guinness World Record with a single haul that yielded some 168 kilograms fish.

People living by Chagan Lake have made a living by fishing for thousands of years.

When food supplies run short during the extreme cold, they depend on fish to survive.

Chagan supplies enough fish to feed its people and enable them to make a profit.

Every year, a ceremony is held before the fishing season to pray for a good catch.

The veteran head of the fishermen determines where the right spot.
