Some 400 holes will be made in the marked area. Then a 2,000 meter long net is cast.

The net sinks into the water and the men wait for the fish to appear.

Fish Farm manager Yan Laisuo said, "Due to its long tradition and present living spirit, Winter Fishing in Chagan was listed as an intangible cultural heritage in 2006."

Passed down from generation to generation, winter fishing and the Buddhist ceremony on Chagan Lake have given visitors an opportunity to interact with nature.

The month-long event attracts many tourists every year and makes the lake a popular tourist destination in winter.

Cao Baoming, vice president of Chinese Folk Artist Association, said, "Everyone wants to have a look at the first fish caught. It's a blessing from Nature."

Chagan is the largest inland lake in the northeastern province of Jilin. Annual fish production reaches 3,000 tons, thanks to the water quality and well-protected environment, which make the lake a heaven for fish and shrimp.
