Over the weekend, Shanghai residents had a chance to have their portraits taken and displayed at Xintiandi. The project was set up by a French street artist who has made similar stops in more than 80 countries since 2011.

Shanghai residents had a chance to have their portraits taken and displayed at Xintiandi.

After waiting in line for hours, 23-year-old Moroccan student Yasmime Chraibe finally got onto a truck that serves as mobile photo booth at Xintiandi. After typing in her name and email address, Chraibe had ten seconds to pose in front of a camera. A few minutes later, a poster-size print of the photo was added to hundreds of similar portraits posted on the streets and walls of Xintiandi.

"Every day is a surprise in the city. I am here since two years. And every day I'm having surprise of the life here. I think it's the most represent of me." Yasmime Chraibe said.

The photo truck is part of an outdoor artistic project called "Inside Out" designed by French street artists JR. He said the project is about letting everyone express themselves through black-and white photography with no logos or brands in the background.

"It's really interesting to see in this time where "selfie" is such a big, you know phenomenon, to see how people turn it into art, or into message, or into a group action. But for me, the most important is the interactions that it creates between people." JR French Artist said.
