The victim, identified only as Urdania, was forcibly taken by armed men on Jan. 29 while heading back to his hotel in Marawi City, provincial police commander Col. Panare Adap told Xinhua by phone.
Adap said the victim, who had worked for a non-government organization, was inspecting construction of Mosques in the province.
"There's an ongoing operation by the police and military. Until now there was no word from the kidnappers," Adap said.
No group has claimed responsible for the abduction but Philippine security forces blamed Al-Qaida affiliated Abu Sayyaf militants in previous incidents.
The 380-strong Abu Sayyaf group, founded in the early 1990s by Islamic extremists, is notorious for kidnappings, bombings and even beheadings in the South over the past decade. The group was blacklisted by Washington as a foreign terrorist organization.
