The world should enhance its understanding of a true Tibet, which is willing to present its development experiences over the past half century, a visiting Chinese scholar said in Santiago Thursday.

Hao Shiyuan, deputy secretary-general of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, made the remarks in an interview with Xinhua while heading a delegation of Chinese academicians in Chile.

Hao said China is seeking a peaceful environment for development based on mutual understanding.

He called for more media covery of China's stance on its domestic affairs, including issues related to Tibet, which helps present the world a true picture of Tibet.

Before the peaceful liberation in 1959, most people in Tibet lived a miserable life under a serf system, Hao said.

Over the past 50 years, with the support of the Chinese government, the Tibet autonomous region has set up a model for sustainable development, which ensured social and economic development and progress in culture, education and health care, he added.

The visit by the Chinese delegation, composed mostly of Chinese specialists in Tibetan studies, was aimed at promoting mutual understanding between the two peoples and presenting a true picture of Tibet.

During the visit, the Chinese academicians held seminars at the Presidential Palace, the Congress, the Foreign Ministry and universities in Chile.

The delegation has also visited Mexico before its tour of Chile.
