Drone strikes kill 18 in NW Pakistan

As many as 18 militants were killed and five others injured in three attacks carried out Wednesday by US drones in Miranshah, North Waziristan Agency in northwest Pakistan, local media The Nation reported Thursday.

According to the report, in the first attack, an U.S. drone fired missiles on two houses allegedly used by militants as compounds. At least 10 militants were killed and three others wounded in the attack, official sources said.

The targeted houses located in Daga Munadi area of Tehsil Miranshah were totally destroyed in the attack. The rescue operation started soon after the incident.

In the second missile strike, a car allegedly driven by militants was targeted in Amborshaga area of Dattakhel. Sources said as many as three missiles were reportedly fried from U.S. unmanned aircraft which killed at least four militants, while two others received injuries.

The third U.S. drone attack targeted a compound in Dandey Darpakhel village, five kilometres northwest of Miranshah, killing four more militants, security officials said.

More than 1,040 people have been killed in 122 drone strikes in Pakistan since August 2008, including a number of senior militants, said the report, adding that the attacks have fueled anti-American sentiment in the country.
