China, Uzbekistan vow to deepen multilateral security cooperation

China and Uzbekistan on Wednesday vowed to deepen security cooperation within multilateral frameworks for the lasting peace, stability and common development in the region and the world at large.
The two countries made the announcement in the China-Uzbekistan Joint Statement, which was issued during Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov's two-day state visit in China.
The statement said China and Uzbekistan will strengthen cooperation within multilateral frameworks such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to promote lasting peace, stability and development in Central Asia.
Both sides agreed that the SCO plays an important role in maintaining regional and global security and deepening trust and cooperation between member states, adding that the development and strengthening of the organization conforms to the interests of member states.
According to the statement, China and Uzbekistan will continue their coordination with other member states of the SCO in order to elevate the organization's role in safeguarding regional security, tackling common threats and challenges, and promoting economic and cultural cooperation.
Both China and Uzbekistan support reasonable and necessary reforms for the Security Council of the United Nations to make it more efficient and more representative for developing countries, the statement said.
The two sides advocated UN member states seek "a package of" solutions on the reform issues and reach the broadest consensus with broad and democratic consultation.
On the situation in Afghanistan, the two countries agreed that the international community should help in Afghanistan's reconstruction under the leadership of the United Nations to promote peace, stability and development of the country and the region as a whole.
The international community should work together to coordinate and take comprehensive measures to push forward the peace process and economic restructuring in Afghanistan, the statement said.
China and Uzbekistan are willing to work together with other parties in the international community for a peaceful, stable, self-reliant and progressing Afghanistan without terrorism and drug-trafficking, it said.
The statement also said China and Uzbekistan should enhance security cooperation and coordination and take forceful measures within multilateral frameworks such as the UN and the SCO to crack down on separatism and terrorism, including the "East Turkistan" terrorist forces.
Karimov arrived in China on Tuesday for a state visit. During his visit, Karimov held talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao, and met separately with China's top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao. The two sides signed a series of bilateral cooperative agreements.
