6.3 magnitude quake hits off Java, Indonesia

An earthquake with magnitude of 6. 3 jolted Java island of Indonesia on Tuesday, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency reported from Jakarta.

The quake struck at 13:39 p.m. Jakarta time (0639 GMT) with the epicenter at 120 km southwest Cilacap of Central Java and with the depth at 24 km under sea bed, official of the agency Arief Akhir told Xinhua by phone.

The intensity of the quake was felt at 3 to 4 MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity) at Pangandaran of West Java, 2 to 3 MMI in Cilacap of Central Java, Bogor and Bandung of West Java, and 1 to 2 MMI in Jakarta, he said.

The USGS reported on its website that the quake was at 5.4 magnitude.

Indonesia sits on a vulnerable quake-hit zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire," where two continental plates meet that frequently cause seismic and volcanic movements.
