Chinese defense minister meets Indonesian counterpart

Visiting Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Liang Guanglie met with his Indonesian counterpart Purnomo Yusgiantoro in Jakarta on Thursday and they exchanged views on bilateral ties and issues of common concern.

Purnomo said that Indonesia and China have maintained close cooperative ties on defense and security, carried out pragmatic cooperation and achieved new breakthrough.

Stressing Indonesia would continue as always to support China on international and regional affairs, Purnomo said he hoped the two sides would join hands to further bilateral ties, deepen cooperation in defense and military, and safeguard regional peace and stability.

For his part, Liang said ties between the two militaries have made encouraging progress in recent years -- there have been close contacts between senior defense and military officials of the two countries and pragmatic cooperation have been carried out in such fields as personnel training, equipment and technology, joint training and maritime and multilateral security.

China is willing to work with Indonesia to push forward their strategic partnership, making fresh contribution to the prosperity and development in the region, Liang added.

Meanwhile, the two sides agreed to positively advance pragmatic exchanges in defense security and strengthen cooperation of mutual benefit in high-ranking contacts, military training and humanitarian rescue activities, to ensure ties between the two countries and the two militaries to develop healthily.

Liang arrived in Indonesia on Tuesday for an official goodwill visit at the invitation of Purnomo. Indonesia is the second leg of Liang's three-nation visit, which has taken him to Singapore, and he will continue to travel to the Philippines.
