A senior U.S. official said Wednesday that the U.S. frequent engagement with China showed the United States wants to work with China for a better future.

Ambassador Kurt Tong, the U.S. senior official for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), made the remarks at a news briefing when asked to comment on the Monday talks between Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in China's southern economic hub of Shenzhen.

Tong said the U.S.-China relationship is "enormously important" to the United States, adding that the latter is prepared to "invest" in the future of this relationship.

Clinton "is personally giving an enormous amount of time to it," said Tong, describing her four-hour talks with Dai as "an extraordinarily long time to be discussing very serious topics."

During their talks on Monday, Dai and Clinton pledged to maintain and promote peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

"The two sides agreed to jointly preserve and promote the hard-won peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region," according to a press release from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
