Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday sent a message of condolences to his Macedonian counterpart, Gjorge Ivanov, over the death of Macedonia's former president Kiro Gligorov.

In his message, Hu spoke highly of Gligorov, who had made contributions to the development of the China-Macedonia friendly and cooperative relations.

A top political figure in Macedonia, Gligorov died at the age of 94 at his home in Skopje Sunday night. He was the country's president from 1991 to 1999.
