The Imperial Household Agency announced that Japan's Emperor Akihito will enter University of Tokyo Hospital on Friday to prepare for his heart bypass surgery.

The emperor will continue his official duties such as meeting with foreign ambassadors to Japan until Thursday.

Emperor Akihito's surgery will be conducted by a team of doctors from University of Tokyo Hospital and Juntendo University Hospital on Saturday which is likely to take about five hours. If there are no complications Akihito will leave the hospital in two weeks.

Akihito, who ascended to the throne in 1989, underwent treatment for prostate cancer in 2003. He was hospitalized for more than two weeks for bronchial pneumonia last November.
