China called for more cooperation with the United States in gender equality, green development and well-being of women, an official of China's biggest women's organization said on Monday.

Meng Xiaosi, vice president of All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), made the remarks at a China-U.S. meeting on sustainable development and the rights of rural women, a sideline event of the 56th UN Commission on the Status of Women.

Meng said people from China and the United States have a common aspiration for gender equality, green development and well-being of women.

"We hope this meeting will produce more rich and practical cooperation from different levels so that we could truly realize sustainable development, equality and peace enjoyed by all people," she said.

Meng said that women from rural area is very important in economic and social development of all countries, especially the developing ones.

"In the past decade, the development of China's rural area has provided fundamental guarantee for improving lives of women in rural area," she said.

Meng briefed the delegates about efforts made by ACWF to help women in rural area to achieve sustainable development, such as providing financial support, improving their health, offering more education and training opportunities.

However, Meng said, it was still a long way to realize gender equality in China's rural areas. Poverty, discrimination and lack of resource and representative in decision-making impact the advancement of rural women.

Meanwhile, climate change, rapid urbanization and industrialization have posed new challenges for rural women to fully achieve sustainable development.

Meng said China hoped the UN Sustainable Development Conference, which would be held in Brazil, could objectively reflect the rural women's concerns, especially those from the developing countries, and yield positive results.

Wang Min, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, said in his opening remarks that he hoped the parties concerned could share experience and contribute to achieving rural women's sustainable development.
