A total of 1,000 youths from China and Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC) will benefit from an exchange plan over the next 5 years, according to an announcement by Qi Xuchun, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. He was speaking at the opening ceremony of the Young Political Leaders Forum of China and Central European Countries in Beijing on Oct. 30, 2015.
The plan, to be launched next year, offers a golden opportunity to deepen mutual understanding and political trust between young people, Qi said.
Encouraging his audience of young Europeans to model themselves on the forerunners of East-West exchanges, he said: "Zhang Qian, the imperial envoy in China's Han Dynasty (206 BC- 220 AD), opened the ancient Silk Road at the age of 25; Zheng He, the great mariner in the early Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), blazed the trail for a maritime Silk Road at the age of 34; Marco Polo, the great Italian traveler, explored the East along the Silk Road at the age 17."
He urged the fledgling politicians to carry on the friendly relationship between China and CEECs, become the trail-blazers of the modern Silk Road in the new millennium and forge consensus and enhance mutual trust through candid and in-depth exchanges.
The forum, organized by the International Department of the CPC Central Committee (IDCPC), is held every two years under the cooperative platform of China-CEEC cooperation, or the 16+1 cooperation mechanism. This year’s event mainly focused on China’s "Belt and Road" Initiative as well as opportunities and challenges in China-CEEC cooperation.
