Pop singer Li Yuchun (pictured) will not only star in Bodyguards and Assassins (Shiyue Weicheng) as a kungfu artist, but also sing the film's theme song.

Li says her big screen debut was tough, but compares herself to Po in Kungfu Panda, who tries her best to learn new things.

Peter Chan, the film's producer, says her performance was as good as that of kungfu star Donnie Yen.

Li stood out of 150,000 competitors to become champion of Super Girls, a Chinese version of the American Idol, in 2005.

Set in early 20th century Hong Kong, Bodyguards and Assassins tells how a group of kungfu masters protect Dr Sun Yat-sen from assassins.

The film also stars Leon Lai, Nicolas Tse and Fan Bingbing. It will premiere on Dec 18.
