She will also sing the song A Beautiful Sunny Day (Yanyang Tian) which Cixi sings in the movie The Burning of the Imperial Palace to seduce Emperor Xianfeng.
While people may be aware that Liu herself sang that song in the movie, few know it was written by Tan Dun, then an unknown student at the Central Conservatory of Music.
"I wish Xiaoqing's performance a huge success," says Tan who now is a world-renowned composer.
"Even though she was a star while I was an unknown, we worked well together. She was passionate and persistent," Tan recalls.
Having undergone training in the dulcimer, piano and vocal singing at the Sichuan Conservatory before she became an actress, Liu has a good sense of music.
"It was Xiaoqing who gave me inspiration to write that song," Tan says.
Some 30 years have passed, but Liu remains just as passionate and persistent. Ever since she decided to do the show in January, she has spent much time preparing for her role.
"People often ask me how I keep fit and still look young. I have no recipe My busy schedule and sports keep me healthy. I often play badminton and now I dance every day," she says.
