Tee-ing up for summer

Many of the cartoon figures being used this season are products of the Shanghai Animation and Film Studio based in Wanhangdu Road near Jing'an Temple, including Mr. Black. He was used in 2010's MTEE designs, and because these products sold so well, he has also been revived for this season's collection. There are also some older figures from three famous local animations produced in the 1950s and 1960s: Proud General, Shuk and Bet, and Simple-minded and Unhappy.

These young designers have recreated these retro cartoon figures in new, stylish ways, such as a Carribean pirate-styled Mr. Black or a Nataku (a Japanese animated figure) wearing a pair of "ham" glasses.

The Hong Kong casualwear fashion brand, Bossini, is bringing us a Smurfs series this summer, in collaboration with the Hong Kong-based creative studio AllRightsReserved. The series is already attracting many compliments for their designs. "For a long time, Bossini didn't have an outstanding feature associated with its brand," Wang Wen, a customer at the Bossini store on Nanjing Road West told the Global Times. "With the Smurf series, it's like the brand is breaking out of its cocoon in order to become a butterfly. Colors are matched well and the tees are designed pretty uniquely."

Apart from simple-print tees, raglan sleeves, bat-wing sleeves and one-pieces designs are also being used on T-shirts in the collection.

Girly touches

Figures on UT's women's T-shirts are nothing new this year, with some commonly-used images like Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Disney's Cinderella appearing for the umpteenth time. Hello Kitty also continues to be popular, with both Meters/bonwe and Japanese fashion brand, b+ab giving the feline superstar another summer outing. After launching a successful crossover series of Hello Kitty, b+ab is working with young Japanese fashion brand Mercibeaucoup to design a new Hello Kitty series for 2011. All the designs will be created by Mercibeaucoup, which is famous in the industry for its use of bold colors; red, blue, black and brown are the four main colors used in the series. And besides printing the Hello Kitty figure on T-shirts, b+ab is also using the character's classical bowknot worn on the cat's ear as a decorative element on the T-shirt's shoulder.
