1, China vows to build cultural power
President Hu Jintao and other senior members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) adopted a guideline at the party's sixth plenary session on Oct. 18 which aims to boost China's soft power by deepening the reform of China's cultural system and promoting the development of the cultural industry.
It was the first time in 15 years that the CPC's decision-makers had focused on cultural issues in the Party's plenary session. A communiqué spelled out the reasoning, stating that culture is emerging as an important part of the country's overall competitiveness in the modern world as China faces the tough task of protecting "cultural security" and enhancing its soft power, along with the international influence of its culture.
All cultural industries, including arts, movies, music, theater, TV, literature, were urged to contribute and they will certainly benefit from new policies, not least financially.
