3. 1982-1984 Taiwan New Films Movement

A 1982 film titled "In Our Time" raised the curtains for the Taiwan New Films Movement.

New notable filmmakers appeared including Hou Hsiao-hsien, Chen Kunhou and Zhu Tianwen.

That same year, the Beijing Film Academy assigned its graduates to different studios. Tian Zhuangzhuang went to Beijing Film Studio, Zhang Yimou, He Qun, Zhang Junzhao and Xiaofeng went to Guangxi Film Studio and Chen Kaige entered the Children Film Studio. The fifth generation of directors was about to enter the historical arena.

From 1983 to 1984, eight famous films "Ah Ying," "Health Warning," "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," "Warriors from the Magic Mountain," "Shanghai Blues," "Love in a Fallen City," "Homecoming" and "Men and Women" were made, all notable and fresh but beginning to lack an edge. From then on, the New Wave movement gradually receded from the stage.

In 1983, Guangxi Film Studio established a camera crew whose average age was 27 and shot the film "One and Eight." It was considered the debut film of the fifth generation directors.

In 1984 Chen Kaige shot the film "Yellow Earth," which was screened at the Hong Kong International Film Festival. It went on to become popular at overseas film festivals and the fifth generation directors made a name internationally.
