The 49-year-old previously spent months learning Chinese kung fu in order to fight off the agents in the Matrix trilogy, but in this film he wanted his style to be fully and authentically Japanese.
Despite the differences and the fact he's now using a weapon, he said his previous kung fu experience did help him, "With stances, with hand techniques, with breathes, with... whether you're throwing a punch or making a move, you know how you sit in your stance, where your pelvis lays, where your weight is, you know there are many things that are similar to being in a kind of Japanese en garde, to being in a form."
Based on a classic Japanese folktale, "47 Ronin" tells the story of 47 samurais whose leader was wrongfully killed. The group then seeks vengeance with the help of a half-breed master played by Reeves.
