Box office total gross of all films in China that year: 2.62 billion yuan

After four years, Zhang Yimou's "Curse of the Golden Flower" beat Feng Xiaogang's "The Banquet" and Hollywood's "The Da Vinci Code" and "King Kong" to become the highest grossing film of the year, and broke the record held by his previous film "Hero."

Since "Hero," a series of Chinese-made films beat foreign imported films in the annual charts. In 2003, Feng Xiaogang's "Cell Phone," grossing 53 million yuan, beating U.S. blockbusters such as "The Matrix Reloaded" and "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines." In 2004, Stephen Chow's kung fu comedy "Kung Fu Hustle" grossed 173 million yuan to top the list, followed in 2005 by Chen Kaige's "The Promise" with 181 million yuan.
