One of this season's classiest debutantes was introduced to the Asian automotive world on April 20 in Beijing by Volvo Cars CEO and President Fredrik Arp when he unveiled the new XC60 at center stage of 2008 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.
Two other new models - the S80 V8 Executive and XC90 V8 Inscription - also officially hit the Chinese market, shown among a full lineup of Volvo models showcased at Asia's largest auto show.
The new XC60, just launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March, is undoubtedly the brightest star due to its bold and passionate design that clearly points to the future of Volvo.
"In order to succeed in competition, you have to stick your chin out and create a car that stands out from the crowd. The new XC60 bases its unique appeal on the synthesis between daringly sporty design and a range of intelligent safety systems that help the driver avoid accidents. This is not only the safest Volvo ever, but also the most stunning one. In my view, it is a perfect combination, making Volvo brand more bold and exciting," says Arp.
Among the big technology developments is an onboard system called City Safety that can help drivers avoid or reduce effects from low-speed impacts that are common in city traffic. Volvo says City Safety clearly advertises that the new XC60 is the safest car it has ever produced.
Its two other models new in the Chinese market continue the legacy of a Swedish premium
design concept and are also equipped with the world's leading safety technology. Volvo flagship S80 V8 Executive sedan is priced at 958,000 yuan and the XC90 V8 Inscription at 1.138 million yuan.
Both models provide a premium image for discerning consumers, signifying Volvo image of top design and respected customer experience.
Volvo has also introduced its environmental Recharge Concept car to China that was launched at the Frankfurt Auto Show last year
The plug-in hybrid features with individual electric wheel motors and batteries that can be recharged from a regular electrical outlet.
The Recharge Concept can be driven about 100 km on battery power alone before the car's four-cylinder Flexifuel engine is needed to power the car and recharge the battery.
If used as expected, the Recharge Concept can reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide by about 66 percent.
In addition to the new models launched and the full lineup models on display in the simple Nordic atmosphere of its 1,200 sq m showroom, Volvo also offers two interactive areas to visitors - Safety Town and Design Island.
Volvo Cars sold nearly 460,000 vehicles in 2007, a 7.1 percent increase over the year before.
Volvo Cars China increased sales by 73 percent in 2007 in the fastest-growing market in the world. Its full lineup includes the S80, XC90, S40, C70 and C30.
