With a staggering total commercial area of 4.7 million square meters, the International Trade Mart at China Commodity City, in Yiwu, Zhejiang province, has been recognized by the United Nations as the largest small commodities wholesale market in the world. Throughout the market’s five districts, over 1.7 million different types of items, divided into 16 main categories which include everything from jewelry to toys to furniture, are sold, earning Yiwu its reputation as “the world’s supermarket.” More than 210,000 employees work in the market’s 70,000 booths, which produced a turnover of 51.5 billion yuan in 2011. The market, first established in 1982, currently receives more than 9.5 million visitors per year. The current facilities first opened their doors in 2002, with the fifth district completed in 2011.
