At least six people were killed including four of a family and four others were injured Saturday after a passenger van they were traveling in was hit by a landslide in Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

The incident took place early morning on the main highway at Khooni Nalla near Ramsoo in Ramban district, 160-km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Six people were killed and four others injured after a vehicle they were travelling in came under a landslide on main road near Ramsoo area," said a police official posted in the area.

No sooner the news about accident spread, locals and policemen rushed to the spot to carry out rescue work.

"Six bodies were retrieved and four wounded persons were removed to hospitals for treatment," the official said.

All the deceased were residents of Srinagar city. The were identified as Faizan Ahmed, Muskaan, Mohammed Yaqoob, his wife Shamima and their two daughters Qaunsar and Neelofar.

According to an official posted at region's Disaster Management Cell in Srinagar, the ill-fated vehicle bearing registration number JK04A-8621was on its way from Jammu to Srinagar.

Kashmir has a rugged terrain. Landslides and avalanches are often triggered from its mountains during frequent rains and heavy snowfall, the region receives.

Earlier this week following a heavy snowfall authorities ordered suspension of the movement of vehicular traffic on the 294- km Srinagar-Jammu highway.
