A landslide hit a mining village in southern Philippines early on Thursday, causing casualties, local authorities said.

The disaster happened in the gold-rich community of Panganason, Kingking village, in Pantukan town in Mindanao's Compostela Valley Province before dawn Wednesday, according to Rhona Siojo, municipal social welfare officer.

Siojo told Xinhua by phone they have received reports of casualties and that disaster teams were already dispatched to the area for rescue operations.

"We are verifying reports of casualties. We don't have figures as of yet," Siojo said.

She said the area had been experiencing heavy rains in the past few days due to a low pressure area over the region, which might have triggered the landslide.

Thursday's incident was the second landslide to hit the area in less than a year.

Last April, at least 20 died when parts of a mountain in the area collapsed, burying dozens of shanties and tunnels owned by small-time gold miners.
