United are looking to launch a £60m bid for Gareth Bale.

Manchester United are looking to make transfer-market splash with a massive £60m bid for Tottenham Spurs' Gareth Bale, according to British media reports.

The move for the Welshman is thought to be one of the reasons why United's vice chairman Ed Woodward is returning early from their pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia.

The defending champions have been quiet in the transfer market so far this summer, but sources close to the club say that is about to change.

Wayne Rooney looks destined to leave Old Trafford amid fresh reports he wants to quit the club and United are looking to overshadow his predicted departure with a big signing of their own.

United are strongly interested in Bale but know that it will be extremely difficult to sign him this summer and are aware of Spurs's stance, which is not expected to change.

Bale, the PFA and FWA player of the year, is understood to be happy at Spurs where he enjoys a strong relationship with head coach Andre Villas-Boas who is determined that the Welshman will stay at the club for as long as possible.
