Thursday wasn't a lucky day for world number five Sara Errani as the fourth seed lost her second round match to compatriot veteran Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-1, becoming the first top ten singles player to be knocked out at the 2013 U.S. Open.
The 83rd-ranked Penneta wasn't an ideal opponent for Errani bas the 31-year-old had won three of the previous five meetings against Errani.
The match went into the rhythm of Penneta from the very first game, in which Errani made too many unforced errors. Errani broke back in the second game, but Pennetta won four straight following games to establish a 5-1 lead, and took the first set 6-3.
Errani was unable to recover in the second set, dropping five straight games after 1-1 to lose the match.
