No. 14 seed Marin Cilic of Croatia needed five sets to beat Frenchman Gilles Simon 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to reach U.S. Open quarterfinals on Tuesday.

It was the third time for Cilic to reach U.S. Open last eight.

Cilic is to meet Thomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in the quarterfinal.
