The University of Bristol is a public research university located in Bristol, one of the U.K.'s most beautiful and inspiring cities. From its founding in 1876 with 99 students, it has developed to a globally distinguished seat of learning, known today for its high quality of teaching and research.

Being a "red brick" university, the university is widely regarded as one of the best in the country and enjoys a strong global reputation, consistently being ranked as one of the top 10 in Europe in the QS World University Rankings 2011/2012.

The university organizes its academic affairs in some 25 academic schools which are arranged into the faculties of Arts, Engineering, Science, Medicine & Dentistry, Medical & Veterinary Sciences and Social Sciences & Law.

The university is truly international, with students from over 100 countries and regions. It is the most popular university in the U.K. with over 14 applicants vying for each spot. For some of the most popular courses, such as economics and law, the applicant to availability ratio is often as high as 40 to one.

Bristol is associated with 11 Nobel laureates, and current academics include 18 fellows of the Academy of Medical Sciences, 10 fellows of the British Academy, 13 fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering and 31 fellows of the Royal Society.
