Mine Production 2010: 189 tonnes
South Africa was the world's 5th biggest gold producer in 2011. The country produced 190 tonnes of gold in 2011, a 0.5 percent slight increase compared to 2010. South Africa is the largest owner of gold resources in the world, with 31,000 tonnes of explored gold reserves. Its major gold mines are situated in the Archaean Witwatersrand Basin, with an output of more than 41,000 tonnes to date. South Africa lost its position as the leader in global gold output, which it had held since 1896, to China in 2007. Since then, the country has seen its gold production continue to decline. Its gold output reached a peak of 1,000 tonnes in 1970, but began to fall steadily after this due to such problems as lower ore grades, power interruptions and rising production costs.
