Ice with that?
When you step into the ice-cold Snow Bar at Binjiang One, an independent lane house-style restaurant in Lujiazui, you will feel as if you entering a secret cave built by Eskimos. Semi-transparent walls and tables are made of glass that resemble ice cubes, and various kinds of vodkas surrounded by snow and ice are displayed on the shelves. The lighting changes from pink to blue constantly, enhancing the magical feeling that you are watching the auroras near the North Pole.
Opened five years ago, Snow Bar is now the only one of its kind remaining in Shanghai, after several others shut down. According to a bar tender, who asked not to be named, one of the attractions is the more than 200 varieties of imported flavored vodkas. Everyone who enters the bar is offered a cotton-padded jacket to wear; a good idea when the temperature is set to a bone-chilling -5 C. The temperature was previously set at -20 C but this was too cold for some lily-livered customers and too expensive for the bar in electricity bills. Even now, staff say that the average customers can stand it for no longer than 20 minutes.
