"On the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, that is the Jinsha River, We lost ten team members in a short time and we lost three when establishing natural protection station in Hoh Xil. I have prepared myself for the worst situation”, Yang Xin, Chinese well-known environmentalist and initiator of NGO "Green River", said in a clam tone.

He thinks it is a miracle for him to live to over forty years old.

At first, it was photography that drove Yang to walk in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. In 1970s, when the camera was still a luxury, Yang sold his ancestral house and spent 120 yuan in buying on Great Wall sz-1 camera. After taking pictures for his family, Yang began his walking life. He visited then seldom known Lugu Lake, Lijiang River, and Tiger Leaping Gorge, which are now popular tourist destinations.

"There was only an inn and a restaurant in Lijiang region and even the local residents didn't know the Tiger Leaping Gorge, I had to explore my way."

As it happens, Yang Xin photographs taken in the Tiger Leaping Gorge of the Yangtze River were seen by expedition members who were ready to take adventure to go rafting in Yangtze River. Those high-spirited young people had no idea about what would happened during their adventure and just invited Yang to join them, the only person who had ever seen the Tiger Leaping Gorge.

Yang Xin reject the invitation initially for he had ever been there and knew that the gorge was insurmountable, but the team members would not give up. At last, Yang, then an accountant of Panzhihua power plant in Sichuan province finally agreed to be in charge of the finance for the team.

"I was 'forced' to join them, and as an accountant, I later became a photographer, and head man", Yang said.
