The palate-provoking food is another thing for foreigners to think before trying, especially for those used to light diets. The ingredients are good and fresh, but the odor is pungent, odd and sometimes stinky.

Taking a typical lunch at the Media Center as an example. A ladle of boiled rice, that's nice; followed by a bowl of soup with miscellaneous contents with weird flavor and ginger, not so nice; fried chicken with a plate-full shredded ginger as the main dish, definitely undesirable.

The inconvenient truth, however, is what you find hard to chew is commonplace here. There is ginger in soup, porridge, noodles, egg rolls, etc. Indeed, they are not only commonplace, but are tasted with relish by locals.

Sophan,a correspondent from local media DAP Media Center, said he had expected the foreigners would frown at the food here, but he strongly recommended eating ginger everyday.

"Ginger is extremely good for digestion and the burning of calories," he said in earnest.
