2. Oregonian Painted Hills

Travelers visiting Oregon usually hit Portland to see the volcano at Lake National Park. But the 14,000 acre state park has a natural geological museum that often goes ignored. Spectacular scenery formed about 35 million years ago after countless volcano eruptions and extreme climate changes hit the area. The arid climate made the original green vegetation wither, and the decaying foliage mixed with volcanic ash, eventually leaving colored stripes on the earth. These color streams come in all hues: blacks, reds, even purples and blues. The colors change according to air temperature variations. It is said that the Painted Hills offer spectators the most beautiful scenery in the evening.[Photo:jandan.net]
