3. Ethiopia extraterrestrial volcano
Ethiopia's Dallol volcano is not a common volcano; it is very low. The groundwater and magma intermingle to form sulfur, iron oxide, salt and other minerals, which pile up, resulting in multicolored formations. Due to recent border tensions and rising numbers of kidnappings in the area, travelers who visit Dallol do so with armed guards, or what locals refer to as "armed tourists." The average temperature here can reach as high as 30 degrees Celsius. Likewise, toxic gas is pervasive in the area, so the volcano attracts just a few hundred tourists per year.[Photo:jandan.net]
