A trial food traceability system will be built in Ningxia's capital city, Yinchuan, this year. The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Commerce approved Yinchuan as the trial city for the program and allocated 32 million (US$5 million) for its construction.
A food tracing platform and a tracing system involving butcheries, wholesale markets, fresh food markets and supermarkets will be formed with the aid of modern information technology and means.
The system will shed light on the origin and circulation of meat and vegetables to guarantee food safety.
The Ministry of Commerce started this program as a response to the need to ensure the distribution of safe meats and vegetables. So far 20 cities have gotten approval to build the system.
