Germany wins women's 50m freestyle

Germany's Britta Steffen set an Olympic record in the women's 50 meter freestyle in a time of 24.06 seconds.The win gives Steffen her second gold medal in Beijing. She was only one hundredth of a second ahead of 41-year old American Dara Torres, who earned the silver medal. Australia's Cate Campbell gets bronze.

Women's Marathon results

Constantina Tomescu-Dita of Romania won today's first gold in the women's marathon.The 38-year-old became the oldest Olympic women's marathon winner by eight years. She finished in 2 hours 26 minutes 44 seconds. Pre-race favourite Catherine Ndereba of Kenya won silver. Zhou Chunxiu was just behind for bronze, securing China's first track and field medal in Beijing.
