China said Tuesday that its special envoy's visits to Sudan and South Sudan were aimed at promoting amity between the two countries, in an effort to safeguard regional peace and stability.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin made the remarks at a regular press briefing in Beijing.

Special Representative of the Chinese Government on African Affairs Zhong Jianhua visited Sudan and South Sudan from March 10 to 13, said Liu.

During his visit, Zhong met with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of South Sudan Grace Daterio, respectively, according to Liu.

Liu said the main purpose of Zhong's visit was to exchange views with leaders of Sudan and South Sudan on bilateral relations and encourage the two sides to resolve differences through dialogue and negotiation, so as to maintain the overall situation of regional peace and stability.

Zhong, who is also China's former ambassador to South Africa, was appointed as Special Representative of the Chinese Government on African Affairs in February, succeeding Liu Guijin.
