On April 27, 2013, the leaders of BRICS member countries wrapped up their latest round of the BRICS summit in the South African city of Durban to promote their partnership for development, integration and industrialization.

The leaders' meeting was the first that the BRICS nations – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – have held on the continent of Africa.

While addressing the summit in his keynote speech, Chinese President Xi Jinping called on all BRICS members to work hand in hand for common development.

He pledged that China would strengthen cooperation with the other members to make the economic growth of BRICS countries more robust and to improve the structure and productivity of their cooperation.

He also called for the improvement of global economic governance and an increase in the political power and representation of BRICS countries in global governance organizations. Furthermore, Xi urged the BRICS nations to move toward the goals of integrated markets, a multi-tiered financial network, greater cultural exchanges and increased connectivity by land, air and sea.

At the summit, the five BRICS members agreed to establish a development bank to mobilize resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS countries and in other emerging and developing nations.

The leaders vowed to reform the international financial system to make it better reflect the "growing weight" of the BRICS countries and other developing nations, adding that the selection of international financial institutions' leadership should be open, transparent and merit-based.

Additionally, the BRICS nations pledged to explore the possibility of strengthening the cooperation between their state-owned firms and to promote the dialogue among their small and medium-sized companies.

The leaders said they would also consider expanding their cooperation to more sectors, including public diplomacy, anti-corruption action, drug control, youth exchanges, tourism, energy and sports.

In their joint statement, the leaders of the BRICS countries voiced their opinions on several key international issues including peace in the Middle East, the Iranian nuclear issue, and the situations in Syria, Mali, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Afghanistan.
