Chinese pop diva Faye Wong yesterday denied on her blog there was a charity fund fraud scandal going on while the foundation founded by her and her ex-husband finds itself in a controversial spell.

"We have never even thought about it, let alone actually did it," Wong wrote, in support of her ex-husband Li Yapeng, "I have faith in every team member of the Smile Angel Foundation. No matter how dark the world is, we still decide to be a light; no matter how sinister the people are, we are still brave enough to be good people."
The Smile Angel Foundation, sometimes known as the Yanran Angel Foundation, is a Beijing-based charity founded in 2006 by Faye Wong and actor Li Yapeng with the aim to help Chinese children born with clefts. It is affiliated with the Red Cross Society of China. The foundation is named after the couple's daughter, Li Yan, who was born that very same year with severe clefts and underwent corrective surgery in the United States.
Wong and Li divorced last year. Their daughter now lives with her father.
Independent investigator Zhou Xiaoyun recently accused the foundation of misusing 70 million yuan (US$11.49 million) in charity funds and added Li may have taken 50 million yuan for his own pocket. The claim soon circulated all voer the country, but the foundation at all times hit back at the claims saying they were untrue. However, yet another independent investigator came to a wholly opposite conclusion from Zhou’s, though admitted there were several imperfections in the foundation's management.
Interestingly enough, Zhou, clearly a fan of Wong's, said he had faith in Wong but still did not believe Li. He once again asked for the full financial statistics of the foundation to be disclosed to the public.
China Youth Daily commented in its social column that China has no independent charity legislation or social organization legislation. The absence of these legislations thus leads to many nontransparent procedures, summing up the current status and predicament of Chinese charity causes.
