Tsui Hark's "The Taking of Tiger Mountain" is based on the bestselling novel "Tracks in the Snowy Forest" by Qu Bo, which also inspired the Peking opera "Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy" in 1958, as well as a 1970 film and three musical dramas produced in the late 1960s. It has been Tsui's long-held dream to revive this red classic about communist army vs. bandits since he first saw the original film in New York 40 years ago. As a technology pioneer, the director uses vivid 3D visual effects to tell an action-packed story with a well-crafted plot, as well as a furious CGI tiger and some cool and badass dialogue. In Tsui's hands, "The Taking of Tiger Mountain" is more of a film of heroism and some wild imagination (including an exciting fighting scene on a crashing airplane) rather than political propaganda.
