The Tokyo International Film Festival was established in 1985 and is one of Asia's main competitive film festivals. The event was held biennially from 1985 to 1991 and annually thereafter in late October to early November. The Tokyo Sakura Grand Prix, handed to the best film, has been the top award at the festival since its founding.
