"Tennis is not that popular in China right now," Li said at a press conference at the WTA Wuhan Open on Monday afternoon. "With more and more tennis tournaments being hosted in China, hopefully we can change the situation."
The Wuhan Open, which has attracted top players like Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova to take part, has still seen a relatively low attendance in the opening two days.
"The 4 grand slams have histories of more than 100 years. The China Open is more than ten years old. You can't expect the Wuhan Open to reach that level in 2 years' time." the former world No. 2 noted.
Asia's first grand slam singles champion Li Na called time on her illustrious tennis career in 2014 and gave birth to a baby girl three months ago.
"Right now the most important things are my daughter and building the tennis academy. I would like to share my experience with younger generations but I will not coach any professional player," the two-time grand slam winner added.
